Dietary Supplements Are Not As Safe As They Seem

A dietary supplement is a commercialized product meant to augment one's daily diet by taking either a pill capsule, or tablet, often in combination with other products. A supplement may offer natural nutrients either from plant sources or those are synthetic to enhance the amount of the user's daily intake. Supplements come in many different types, such as vitamins and minerals, amino acids, herbal extracts, enzymes, herbal teas, and even proprietary blends. These are all intended for increasing the user's nutritional intake, whether for improving sports performance, healing from illness, or increasing energy or weight loss. However, not all dietary supplements are created equally.

One of the most common and potentially effective dietary supplements includes vitamins. A wide range of vitamins are available and they come in several forms. They are available in the form of a vitamin pill, as a simple vitamin powder or in the form of a liquid that can be drank like a tea. Common synthetic vitamins include those produced from animal tissues and milk. While some studies have indicated that some vitamins may have positive health benefits, most scientific research indicates that dietary supplements including vitamins and minerals have no proven benefits for overall health.

Amino acids are another group of natural substances found in foods. They are also included in dietary supplements. A number of studies have suggested that amino acids may help in the treatment and prevention of serious diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. However, most scientific research indicates that dietary supplements containing amino acids are not effective in these diseases' treatment and prevention and may actually cause these diseases to worsen.

Herbal extracts are products intended for consumption and used in dietary supplements to provide a boost in the user's diet. This includes ingredients such as green tea, ginger, lemon extracts, ginseng, and pomegranate. While they are generally considered safe, there is still insufficient scientific research to support their use in the treatment and prevention of serious ailments. Some of these herbs are sold legally as health food products, while others are marketed as herbal medicines. Click here on this page for more on this topic.

The manufacture of this product is important because they are meant for direct consumption by the consumer. Manufacturers must ensure that the products are safe and present no danger to the consumer. Many manufacturers have been found to be violating this safety standard because they fail to comply with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations regarding dietary supplements. Most dietary supplements fall into one of five categories: antibiotics and antibacterials, anti-cancer and immune system enhancing, fat blocker, carotenoids and flavonoids, and dietary fibers.

Each dietary supplement has different amounts of various elements that it contains. Each of these elements may have different actions on the body, so the minerals and amino acids that a dietary supplement contains may affect how well the body functions. For instance, fat is essential to the human body but too much fat can increase blood pressure and cause heart attack. Therefore, while vitamins are essential to the human body, too much of some vitamins can cause problems.
